As I was sifting through old MJ threads, I came across a rather unpleasant fellow who it would appear is no longer around. He purports to be a Franciscan deacon though not much in his demeanor emulates St Francis.

His signature phrase, attributed to Ignatius of Antioch, caught my eye and struck me as a bit odd: “For if we are still practicing Judaism, we admit that we have not received God’s favor…it is wrong to talk about Jesus Christ and live like Jews. For Christianity did not believe in Judaism, but Judaism in Christianity."

Ignatius Bishop of Antioch (98-117A.D.) – Epistle to the Magnesians

Odd because it collides with history and is illogical. So I did some research.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch was probably martyred around AD 115, A SHORT TIME AFTER THE LAST Apostle was laid in the grave. He was not one of the Apostles. The epistle to the Magnesians is quoted by many (first-day) historians as being outright spurious, or at least corrupted by a translator to replace the term "Lord’s life" with "Lord’s day." Killen* tells us that "In the sixteenth century, fifteen letters were brought out from beneath the mantle of a hoary antiquity, and offered to the world as the productions of the pastor of Antioch (Ignatius). Scholars refused to receive them on the terms required, and forthwith eight of them were admitted to be forgeries. In the seventeenth century the seven remaining letters, in a somewhat altered form, again came forth from obscurity…Again discerning critics refused to acknowledge their pretensions…"

*Dr. Killen is a respected ecclesiastical historian, in Ireland no less.

Quoting Ignatius as a Church Father reminds me of the enterprising monks of Glastonbury Abbey who, poking about in their backyard, “discovered” the graves of King Arthur, and Guinevere no less.

My, my!

Thank you.

Although not surprising, there have been quite a few "guests" here at MJ that have not conducted themselves very well.

I promise to be an exception. I seek truth. If I am in want of the pointy-headed self-righteous to make me feel better about my neuroses, they are easy enough to find.

Yafet,

Where I come from there is a lot of Latin flung around. I suppose in an attempt to water ones roots. Perhaps mine are thirstier.
