Hey guys,
I enjoyed our discussion in the PRE thread "Lutheran-Catholic dialogue".
I tried my best to stay within the rules of PRE and not debate you, but you have made charges against the Catholic church that I feel need to be answered.
Would you like to have a formal debate here?
We can make the topic as broad or narrow as you like. The topic that I have in mind is:
"Did the Catholic church gravely error with the Council of Trent and Vatican II?"
You two seem to be making those charges. Would you like to discuss them here, without the restrictions of PRE?
If you accept, you may have any team members that you want, but we will adhere to formal debate rules. I propose opening statements, then five rounds of point and rebuttal, then closing statements.
PM me, and we will decide on terms and who goes first.
Thanks,
Jerome

I'd like to team up with Jerome (BWAP) on this.

I would not mind doing a formal debate. I have a couple people in mind for a team, I will have to get in contact with them and see if they have the time.
Lately I've been pretty busy, so perhaps we could wait until after Easter?

After Easter sounds good. Is the topic alright for you?
Do you want nyj and myself to go first, or do you want your team to go first?
Either way, I will wait till after Easter to post.

So are we settling on 2 on 2 or 3 on 3? Also, do we want to iron out any of the other details now or wait? Post length, time between posts, etc etc?
After Easter works for me too.

This should be good :)

Okay, it looks like I may be the only person on the Lutheran team who is going to have the time to consistently post.
Lets try to agree on rules. Here are a few that I've had in my head:
I think we agreed on 1 week between posts.
5 rounds of rebuttals may be sufficient, though we would rather go to the limit of 8. We would also like a character limit larger than 5000. Perhaps 7500? I do not see how we can address such a far reaching topic in a page and a half :D
I would like to set out before hand that neither side should attack the character/credibility of either sides church fathers, theologians, etc.
I assume, since your team is the defense, that we will make the first post. Correct?

That is acceptable. I agree that we should not attack eachother, but give due dilegence to the topic, as befitting men of God. 7500 characters and a week between posts is good. I am willing to go 8 rounds, knowing that this will take us to four months:D , but the length of time should do justice to the topic at hand.
I am going to be away from a computer from April 10-17. My children are being baptized April 10, and then we are going on family spring break. I will not have the resources to devote to this topic during that time. Do you want to make the first post on Apr 17, 2004?

Sounds good.
It is agreed. The topic will be "Did the Catholic Church gravely error with the Council of Trent and Vatican II?"
There will be eight rounds, with one week between posts, 7500 character limit, and Lotar will make the first post on April 17,2004.
Looking forward to the coming four months:)

Since the first post from each group is their "position", we should be able to come up with something before April 10th if need be, and tweak it before the 24th when it's due. :)

It looks like I sort of forgot to tell you who's on our team :o
Other than me, there is theologica crucis and Rechtgläubig.
Perhaps you could add another member to balance it out. If not, I guess I'll have to tell somebody to take a hike.

Only one person at a time can post, and we have a week between posts, so if you want to go three on two, its ok by me. Y'all can PM back and forth to prepare posts; we will do the same. I thought that you were supposed to start today:scratch:
When ever you're ready:)

Three on two is fine by me.
