I did NOT miss gossip - I simply called it murder according to Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Concerning unbelief, I remind you of the story of Zekharyah:

Luk 1:1 Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,
Luk 1:2 even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,
Luk 1:3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;
Luk 1:4 that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.
Luk 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Yehudah, a certain Kohen named Zekharyah, of the priestly division of Aviyah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aharon, and her name was Elisheva.
Luk 1:6 They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the mitzvot and ordinances of the Lord.
Luk 1:7 But they had no child, because Elisheva was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
Luk 1:8 Now it happened, while he executed the Kohen's office before God in the order of his division,
Luk 1:9 according to the custom of the Kohen's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
Luk 1:10 The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
Luk 1:11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
Luk 1:12 Zekharyah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
Luk 1:13 But the angel said to him, "Don't be afraid, Zekharyah, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elisheva, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Yochanan.
Luk 1:14 You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.
Luk 1:15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
Luk 1:16 He will turn many of the children of Yisra'el to the Lord, their God.
Luk 1:17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Eliyahu, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Luk 1:18 Zekharyah said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years."
Luk 1:19 The angel answered him, "I am Gavri'el, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.
Luk 1:20 Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn't believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time." Zekharyah was struck dunb for speaking His unbelief, therefore speaking unbelief when you know better is a sin! Na na na na naaa na! Now, how many times have you read in scripture that those that speak pridefully will be brought low? Hmmm... OK, maybe I'm stretching it or maybe you may have to extend you list?

So Talmidim and Rooster and everyone else....are there any more sins of the tongue that you can bring to the table and quote the verse that confirms it? The challenge is on...Talmidim thinks that there are 20-24.

Beguile
2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
Blasphemy
Matthew 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Boasting
James 4:16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.Cursing
Psalm 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
Deceit
Job 13:7 Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?
Fraud
Leviticus 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.
False witness
Exodus 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour
Flattery
Job 17:5 He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail.
Proverbs 6:24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
Judgement
Leviticus 19:15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.
Lords name in vain
Exodus 20
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Murder
Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Pride
Psalm 59:12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.Slander
Psalm 101:5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.
Spitting
Isaiah 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
Unbelief
1 Timothy 1:13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

visionary! Shame on you. Holding up in public what I offered in private and in jest. 20-24 may be REALLLLLLY hard. It's a good thing that I've already gotten 11. :D

Lying & beguiling and fraud that's three for you!
Boasting & gossip are two more! OK, I said boasting (is my nose bleeding?). That makes 5 plus my 11.

rooster -
I'll concede incitement only because provoke is a synonym to incite: Exo 23:21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
OK, I could not find "condescendence" or any synonym and I think putting someone down might fall under speaking curses, but that's a judgement call and this is visionary's thread. I found this in support of false worship/flowery prayer Mat 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
That make two more, so we are up to 18! And they are...

flattery
murder
deceit
false witness
unbelief
slander
cursing
Lords name in vain
pride
judgement
blasphemy
lying
beguiling
boasting
fraud
gossip
provoking
false worship/flowery prayer
Only 2 more to reach 20 and 6 more to reach 24! C'mon everyone, let's go for it!

Welcome. This is kind of a scriptural scramble where we get to play fast and loose (within reason) with the concept of sins of the tongue. Read my post with the story of Zekharyah. See if you consider his unbelief blaspheme. I'd be interested in your opinion (provided you agree with me). :D Just kidding...

Todah rabbaTalmidim,

Well, I've read the referred to Zekharyah story and restudied the definition for blasphemy and I come to this conclusion.

I believe Zekharyah's merely received discipline for his unbelief. And that his words to Gavriel were said in ignorance and thus not blasphemy.

Blasphemy is defined as a willful intent to disparage or speak evil of, not said in ignorance but with full knowledge and intent to speak it.

Hence Zekharyah was disciplined and then forgiven. Heck even the discipline was for the betterment of all things. It prevented him from speaking further unbelief that might have then lead to the sin of blasphemy.

But seeing how it does not appear to be a malicious question only an ignorant one I believe the only sin committed here was unbelief.

Which would in turn mean that it was committed by the tongue!!! Visionary, you are correct. And the list grows...

Come to think of it. Talmidim is correct as well. This list must be more than 13. Considering the heart is evil, wicked beyond all things. And it is out of the abundance of the heart a man speaks. So how many sins do you think your tongue can commit? I would venture to imagine much more than 13.

b'Shalom

I think that my post is very detailed.
If you say something that shows "un-love' for either God or man it is a sin of the tongues. Things aren't meant to be difficult, but rather to be put into action. The Gospel is quite easy, isn't it?
Can you think of anything that doesn't fit into one of those categories.

lol :) I guess you would have to have an understanding or exposure to jewish thinking to understand my post.

Forgive me. When I questioned you about a "jewish soul" (in jest albeit "disclaimer was posted") I did not notice you were actually "Christian". I notice now you are Christian by the cross you sport and the way you express G-d in thought and in text.

Jewish thought tends to break things down to it's bare means. Or should I put it another way. Attempts to see all the parts of the whole. i.e. Echad, a complex unity. We don't merely look at the cover and say, "it's all good" and never wonder about what makes it good from the inside out. This has lead to many "fences" and traditions that exceed the bounds of G-d's intent. But Christianity tends to do the opposite and just saying, "it's all good" because he said it is. And yet stumbling over themselves because they do not understand HOW it is good.

kapish? Understand my point?

This thread is proposed like a "bait and switch" riddle. How many different ways can you... (fill in the blank)? There are only thirteen (yeah right, we're up to 19).:D

It is an exercise initiated by that sadistic poster, visionary. She has trapped us all in a quandry of our own choosing. Inciting lovers of the word to embrace a question of doctrine (?) with no set answers is like leaving a magazine of unsolvable puzzles in a house full of speed freaks. We twiddle away the hours, pouring over scripture while seeking to answer the burning question, "how many ways can man sin with his tongue". Luckily, we all understand her to mean by speech. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. 9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

While reading " He did it....She did it..." I click on pic and came across

Cain made the infamous reply, "Am I my brother's keeper?" Thus, the first murderer in history was also the one to invent sarcasm.

So here is one for you....Zayit

Congradulations!..... you are now on the "sins of the tongue" board.
