Shalom, well it is about my third day on Atkins. I was on the diet during the summer and lost about 25 pounds! I have put on some more weight and I need to get it off now, and Atkins is the only way that works for me. But there is one problem, mean and cheese. Need I say more? What should I do?

*Wave's an anti-atkins banner!* atkins is wrong!!!!! Go weight watchers!!!!(no I'm not plugging any particular diet program.... :sorry: ) I think anyone on atkins should stop what they are doing and go on 2000 Kcal a day diet with some moderate exercise, atkins is a little to....crazy(on a health standard) than a 2000 kcal diet. Especially if you plan on staying on it for like...the rest of your life, which is what they(atkins) wants you to do(which is very wrong).

Atkins is the newest idol of a overly weight concious society. Everywhere I look in the super market now you find new labeling with "LOW CARB" and "ATKINS APPROVED". What ever did people do a hundred years ago, let alone the rest of the millinias past? It is all about self control which is what the Bible teaches doesn't it? If we eat like Hedonists then we will have to diet like hedonists, and HaSHem wants us to choose life, not die-it. It is a way of the world. Do we need diet gurus to tell us how to live?
Bible live-it works best!
* Disclaimer* This is not aimed at anyone in particular, just needed to rant after all the buzzing about this diet for so long. I think it has become an idol in itself. * :sorry:

Well, I don't eat fast food, or even a whole lot, I am just not the most physically active person.

I tried it for about a week. It worked nicely, but it seemed best to stick to dairy and/or parve. I don't see it as a life long workable thing for me personally. I found that looking at the carbohydrates was helpful- lowering the potatoes and pasta were helpful. The meat/milk mixture at the same time wasn't an issue for me.

Just think about this Adkins dude who started the diet...died at 280 pounds
Also its unhealthy it sends your body into a state of ketosis(sp?)

What do you do about challa?Well, we only have it on Shabbat, ande since ANY challah is more than a double amount for us, we have one Challah roll over which we b'rakha and each of us takes an olive sized piece to eat - and our mum-in-luv gets the rest!! :)

The problem then with you might not be eating less, but perhaps eating more? The best diet I have ever seen was eating until you were satisfied, not full. So just take what you think you need, and keep eating untill you are not hungry. Also try drinking more water, at least 8 glasses a day, especially one before and after a meal and one in the middle of a long intercession between meals(like lunch and dinner, or breakfest and lunch).

1) Atkins is recommended by many doctors, even cardiologists, and by our family doctor....
2) ANY diet done incorrectly is potentially dangerous
3) restricting calaries is not a realistic approach for some people
4) restricting calaries and increasing exercise alone is not effective for some people
5) some people can't exercise, even "moderately" due to various health factors
6) if you studied Atkins you would know that the lifetime level of atkins is just good smart, healthy eating with a moderate level of controlled carbs, esp avoiding the carb heavy "low fat" "guilt-free" insulin trigger foods that have been a large portion of the common market fare :)
7) there is good solid nutritional science behind atkins, but again, ANY diet done inappropiately is dangerous ;)

So sad, not to have your daily bread. It's a good thing for those of us from Jacob's line that they didn't have a type of Atkins diet in the wilderness, else there wouldn't have been anyone left to go into the Promised land! :D

Yup I understand all, and not to start a nutrional debate or anything(cause I am no expert) but did you know that there was a diet study done with Ithnk either 4 or 5 diets. A group of people went on a different diet, one was Weight Watchers, one was th ornish, atkins, a control of a "normal" diet, and then the last was the normal diet with an increased protien intake. The diet that did best overall was in fact weight watchers, those poeple stayed on it the longest, lost just as much weight, but not as quickly as everyone else. Atkins did in fact have the most weight loss, and the quickest, but people gained their weight much quicker, and many more people stopped dieting a lot sooner. The ornish diet was smular to the WW diet, and the normal diet gave the control results. Now, the last diet, what makes it so interesting is that it showed weight loss! Yup, increase the ammount of protien you eat w/out killing carbs actually shows weight loss! Now, I can't force you or anyone to stop atkins, I feel its not worth it unless your trying to lose a small ammount of weight only once an a while. But as the studies show, increase your protien and you should start to lose weight, even though its slow :( Just my $.02.
Shalom!

 Oh one thing I forgot to mention, that atkins dosn't, if you stay on a high protien diet for many years it will hurt your kidneys! No if's ands or buts, you will eventually have to go on dialysis. They cannot prevent that.

Hey, it is the only way that I can loose weight, so I am going to do it. Thanks for your concern guys!
Now that scares and really does concern me Michael, to rely on man(kind) too much is bad but to say that this one man is the only one that can help you is very DANGEROUS. Nothing, NoOne should be in this position in your life but Yeshua! Have you prayed about this? I remember a few weeks back you couldn't fast but for 1 hour and then you were sitting in front of your PC chomping on McDonalds! Which is not only trief, but unhealthy all around. I understand you have been brought up in a generation of Happy Meals, but you are old enough now to see what that has done to you!
I suggest that you pray, that you seek to find an online weigh concious prayer group and bring this to the L-RD. He is there for everything and especially this. There is no doctor, Jewish or not that knows your body inside and out, like the one who made you and knows what you have made of your body. You need to rely on HIM , not Doctors, not diets. Our bodies are the temple where the Ruach HaKodesh lives, we are entreated to keep it clean and well maintained and provided with the correct fuel at the correct times to run it properly.
You said before that you couldn't be that active but didn't say why? What prevents you from being active?
I'm sorry I sound so strong about this but I hate seeing people use crutches when they have been given two good legs to walk, or if not have not sought the L-RD FIRST to help them. Many times he is in reserve for what can't be done by man when it should be the other way around.
Have you ever heard of something called the bible diet? I read on here someones post about this and it sounded sound to me. Perhaps you can look that up too, after serious prayer time with the L-RD over this.
Michael J, I am saying all this to you in love, not reprimand, please know this, I have in my family a grandson who at age 7 was overweight by 25 lbs and could barely fit into a size 12huskey which had to be hemmed up 6 inches or more, by me. This came from a diet of sugar cereal, grilled cheese, mac n' cheese ( box) and pizza and happy meals with lots of cookies, ice cream and snacks in between and being glued to the television. Yet, his brother who ate the same stuff ( except to add vegetables because I got him to like them while still young ;) ) but could never sit still is average weight, even with disabilities.

Keep it simple. NO BIGGER THAN YOUR FIST portions
Meat no bigger than your fist.
Two colors of vegetables.
Pasta. Potatoes, rice, portions no bigger than your fist.
Bread ...again no bigger than your fist
Fruits portions no bigger than your fist and not be eaten with vegetables.
If you follow this diet, you will not over eat. You will feel satisfied and you will have the variety and nutrition that your body needs.
This is a lifestyle diet.
