OH GUYS!! I went driving in my state this past weekend, and I encountered the weirdest thing: There is actually a public park called "Satan's Kingdom State Park"--no joke :o .

Umm . . . does anyone know how a public park can be called "Satan's Kingdom???" That just seems soooo wrong! The state is Connecticut, in case you are interested.

Yikes! :(

Frightening! Actually a bit of research on the 'net revealed that the area got it's name in the late 18th century from the number of outlaws that used it as a base.

With out even looking at your profile I'm going to guess you're from Connecticut.

Let me just tell you Satans Kingdom has some tubing goodness down the Farmington ( if i remember correctly) river. I went there with a yuth group a few times. Really had a great time.

I know the river is beautiful!!! I recently moved to CT, so seeing "Satan's Kingdom" for a state park really freaked me out. I still don't think I'd go there, though--just seems sort of "off" to me. If they renamed it, though, I'd love to see that area--simply gorgeous! Do you think I'm being too funny about the "name" of the place???

I've heard names like "Devil's Fork" and "...Backbone", and so forth and, seeing the areas, they're usually pretty hard to navigate or really steep. But 'kingdom'! LOL! (Actually, I've thought of Lowe's that way -- filled with things I don't need but, upon seeing them, covet.)

LOL, ethereal! I feel the same way at Lowe's, and at most office supply stores...

I can see how the name "Satan's Kingdom" is off-putting, but knowing the history of the name, it wouldn't bother me to go to the place. That's just me, though.

Good News Lux!

Joh 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Joh 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Joh 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Oh wait thats not really that great of a news.

Here is the GOOD NEWS!

1Co 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessings and much Love

No reason to be bugged out by it. It's just a name. And you're missing out on a good time.

Just one hint. 5 minutes into the tubing trek... under the first bridge... watch your tailbone.

There's a road that takes you north through Glencoe in Scotland and there's part of it called the Devil's Elbow. There's nothing Satanic about it, it's just a really bad bend. Is it worth getting worked up about?

cheers,

The Satan's Kingdom park is on a road near Farmington. It parallels the Farmington River. I'm not that familiar with CT, but I was driving from Mansfield to the Sundown Ski place and I went through Farmington.

I don't think the name would bother me so much if it were not for the word "kingdom"--that's just want gives me the creeps (not that I actually like anything with the name Satan or devil either, but I digress . . . )

Somewhere near Satan's Kingdom park is a road called "Satan's Kingdom way", too. I'd hate to live there!

If I lived there I'd petition the town to rename the place. Can you imagine writing "Mr. & Mrs. So and So/ 666 Satan's Kingdom Way" on your Christmas cards???? Demented. :(

This may be off on a tangent here, but I wonder how long until the atheists start suing Missouri to have the name "Saint Louis" changed because it might violate the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution. We also have a "Saint Augustine" in Florida. I am sure there are others.

More closely related to this thread - Isn't there a "Kill Devils Hill" in North Carolina? Maybe I have the state wrong, but I think it's a town. I believe there are lots of towns across this country that are either associated with God or with satan.

My favorite name of a town though is "Christmas, Florida". I am sure it won't be long before the ACLU goes after the name of that town.

Funny too, because our pastor made a comment about the PETA people asking some town in New England to change it's name because it was identified with the name of an animal, which they found defamatory.

And I would imagine this can really get out of hand if they start renaming towns because it might be offensive to former slaves. I live in Leesburg, VA, which can be corelated back to General Robert E. Lee. What? Should we change the name because Lee fought to uphold slavery?

Where will the PC police go next?

Saint Paul, Minnesota. I mean - it's only the capitol of the state!

Can't have it though - it's a violation of the establishment clause of the US Constitution!!!!

Um, NOT!!!

Historical Facts
Satan’s Kingdom Village
The name “Satan’s Kingdom” comes from the lawlessness of a local population composed of prisoners and people rejected from other areas who lived here during the late 1700s. The lands extending west of the Satan’s Kingdom gorge area are referred to as “Satan’s Kingdom Village” or “Satan’s Kingdom.”
Satan’s Kingdom Bridge
The Satan’s Kingdom section of the river has been home to several bridges. The first bridge ever built here was marched across by Revolutionary War soldiers on their way to Boston on the Lexington alarm. The bridge was also used for hauling weapons that were cast by ironsmiths throughout Northwestern Connecticut. Toward the end of the Revolutionary War, General Burgoyne’s troops passed over the bridge to surrender later at Saratoga, NY. Indian Hill/Nepaug State Forest

Wow. So it wouldn't bother you at all to live in "Satan's Kingdom?" I can see how some people could get over that, but that would just seriously bother me having to explain it to everyone.
