SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley handed down the sentence for David DePape, 44, whom jurors found guilty last November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term.

DePape was given 20 years for one count and 30 years for another count. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also given credit for the 18 months that he’s been in custody.

DePape stood silently as Judge Corley handed the sentence and looked down at times. His public defense attorneys had asked the judge to sentence him to 14 years, pointing out that he was going through a difficult time in his life and had no prior criminal history.

At least this guy is in jail now. We do not need violent people walking through our cities. Jail is where these folks belong, and hopefully this guy repents.

Seems that justice was hammered out for this guy.

Even though he was going through a bad time in his life, that is no excuse for his actions. He belongs in jail. Yes, jails can have rehabilitation and mental health programs, but he must be kept away from people for at least two or more decades.

And yet, when an illegal from England attempted to grab a police officer's weapon to kill President Trump, he only got 12 months and was released after 5 months. Again, there are two justice systems in America.

Agreed. Even though I do not like Trump (or even Biden to an extent), grabbing an officer's weapon should be an offense of at least 10 to 20+ years in an ideal world. Yes, it does seem that there are two justice systems in the US.

Did you read the article? The two cases can't come close to being compared. This boy needs mental health intervention and even the judge said so. The best thing for everyone is that he is returned to the UK and his parents where he can get the care he needs.

Agreed. He is only 20, and also had autism. Hopefully, he gets the right mental care. If he did not have autism and underlying mental conditions, then he should serve a sentence. But, as he had a mental condition, mental health care must come first, though hopefully he is banned from going to any gun shops.

From the article: During the trial, Judge James Mahan told Sandford: “You should not be ashamed or embarrassed about it. You need medication. “You’re not a hardened criminal. You’re not evil or a sociopath like a lot of people we have.”

How exactly are these crimes comparable? The person who attacked Pelosi's husband actually attacked him (and inflicted enough damage that he had to be hospitalized). What the person you're referring to did was attempt to take a gun from an officer. He may have had the goal of using it to shoot Trump, but he didn't try to kill him yet. If he actually fired some shots, that would make the crimes more comparable, but he never reached that point, and thus the crime was obviously much lesser.

There's another very important difficulty between the two situations: The person you're referring to pleaded guilty. The guy who attacked Pelosi's husband, rather than pleading guilty, pleaded not guilty and went to trial, then was found guilty. As anyone familiar with the US justice system should know, if you plead not guilty, go to trial, and are found guilty, you'll get a harsher sentence than if you had just pleaded guilty and avoided the trial.

These are really not comparable cases.

Yes. One where if you hit someone with a hammer it's considered a greater crime than if unsuccessfully try to take a gun from a police officer in a misguided attempt to try to shoot someone.

Sounds like a real hellscape.
