In an interview with “60 Minutes” airing this Sunday, Pope Francis takes aim at his “conservative critics” in the United States, reportedly saying a conservative is someone who “clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”

“It is a suicidal attitude,” the pope said as reported by “60 Minutes,” which released a brief clip of the upcoming interview conducted by CBS’ Nora O’Donnell.

“Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box.”

Well, both the far left and far right bury their heads in the sand. Nothing new under the sun.

(sigh) I get soooo tired of this guy. :disappointed:

Frank, a conservative is somebody who wants to conserve something that is worthwhile, not somebody who is "closed up in a box".

And there is more than one way to commit suicide, too---like if you're so open to change that you gradually bleed all your convictions away, and you're left with nothing. "The One, Indifferent, New Age, Liberal, and Apathetic Church."

I was raised as a conservative evangelical non-denominational Protestant. I have been what most people would call "conservative" my entire life.

I firmly believe that Leftist ideology is the philosophy of hell and is fundamentally anti-human and anti-God.

However, in becoming Catholic I was introduced to classical Catholic thought and it lead me to expand my study of history, and philosophy. As a result my worldview shifted from a distinctly modernist view to something much more heavily influenced by ancient and medieval thought.

For example, growing up I was absolutely committed to the Classical Liberalism which produced Republicanism (in the 18th century sense) and I considered that to be basically be all but divinely revealed as the way. I believed that the USA was basically founded on pure Christian Biblical ideas.

Now, I realize that Classical Liberalism and the American founding were poisoned by Enlightenment thought that was fundamentally anti-Christian and explicitly anti-Catholic. As such I have come to the opinion that the western liberal democracy, exemplified by the US, is a doomed and failed experiment that was based upon false assumptions both about human nature and about God.

As such, I have significant disagreements with most of what American conservatism has become today. While I identify as conservative because it is the closest thing anyone will understand, I am more and more hesitant to do so because I find myself more and more not wanting to associate myself with what I see conservatives becoming.

Too much of conservatism has ceased to be based on reasoned principle, and has simply become knee-jerk reactions.

From my point of view, current day conservatives are liberals. I categorize the modern leftwing as radical revolutionaries and the modern right as moderate revolutionaries. They are mostly two sides of the same modern coin. One is just more extreme than the other.

I also think people, and especially Catholics, need to stop getting sucked into the Hegelian false dichotomy. Our choice of philosophy and worldview is not binary. It is not simply the modern left or the modern right. This whole false dichotomy binds people into reactionary thinking and distorts how people see reality. It is an illusion that serves to bind people more firmly into the greater illusion of modernism and post-modernism.

All this to say. I disagree with Pope Francis about lots of things and I think his particular attacks on conservatives and traditionalists are motivated more by his own ego and his own dislike of being questioned and challenged than by anything else. However, he isn't 100% wrong about this.

Seems that the churches are all becoming Laodiceans. In Revelation 3:15-16, Jesus warns the church in Laodicea for being lukewarm in their faith and for not realizing that they are poor, blind, and naked. 2 Timothy 4:3 has a similar warning. Some churches nowadays are starting to follow the doctrine of total individualism, which is not in the Bible. This is a belief that emphasizes self-indulgence (for instance, the far-left falling for the messed up trans movement, or the far-right falling for Big Oil which is destroying the environment), disregarding the importance of community and the greater good.

I hate to ask this, but is it possible that American conservatives don't like Pope Francis because he doesn't agree enough with Republican things?
No. It’s about teaching and practice of the faith. Has nothing to do with Republicans. Not all Catholic conservatives are Republicans you know. :)

Yeah but most are (in America), lol.
I know many that aren’t and do not affiliate with either party. I’m one of them

There is a difference in Catholic values versus political values (at the time) till the next thing comes down the pike.

God bless you, for not affiliating with any party.

For myself, I support protecting the Earth (as said in Genesis), being pro-life (as in 10 commandments), immigrant screening (but not a ban, as stated by Jesus "love your neighbor"), and proper healthcare (as stated in Sirach). So, I am neither D or R.

Well, my friend, I am one of the rare ones. I am pro-life, but also pro-environment. So, I might be a centrist Christian/Catholic, but would be considered a conservative by the left, but a liberal by those from the right.

No....I suspect that American conservatives don't like Pope Francis because he doesn't agree enough with common-sense moral things.

Between being soft on homosexual perversion, being hard-line on lay Catholics and prelates who prefer strict moral codes, and his baffling stunts like dragging pagan idols into St. Peter's Basilica, I'm afraid Frankie lost this American conservative long, long ago.
