Greedy corporations don't want to pay people wages and replace them with machines. They deserve what they get but personally, I like self-checkout because I hate standing in line. I won't pay extra for it though.

Walmart sucks, Aldi has lower prices and the self checkout is free and has high tech cameras that keep an eye on people. Plus, the lines in the cashier checkout (when I have a bigger order) are not that long.

You have the luxury of a large city. I have to drive 1.5 hours to enjoy what you big city people take for granted. I've heard that Aldi is nice but never been to one.

Yeah, I will not state the population of my city, but it is somewhat big. If you ever go to another city or travel, I recommend trying out an Aldi, but bring a quarter. That is how you can unlock the shopping carts. You will get your $0.25 piece back when you return the carts.

Dollar General has self-checkout with cameras. I know of one that stopped it due to theft.

From not paying me with a discount for checking out my own purchases to wanting to charge me? No thank you! I’ll continue to stand in line for an actual employee so someone gets a paycheck.

Another issue in some places with self-checkouts: Used as bill changers. Someone uses a large bill to purchase an inexpensive item. Was informed this is why some only accept cards. Have seen one in a convenience store with a sign that was basically a rant that this was not a coin changer.

Why a self-checkout in a convenience store? It's real handy for pre-pay at fuel pumps.

I love self checkout too. What burns my britches is when someone comes through with a huge cart of groceries with a ton of veggies that have to be looked up individually. Most places want no more than a small basket in those lines. Some people in order to avoid a line will take a half hour to scan everything when they could have waited in like for ten minutes and been checked out in five, bagging for another five.

Most people in the self check line have just a few things. I remember this lady standing in line with nothingbut a bouquet of flowers behind someone with an overflowing cart of food. By the time they got done, 13 more people were lined up with their baskets.

Amen brother. My rule of thumb is this: Two to three small bags max, 1-20 items, or < $50 = self checkout. 3 or more small bags or $50+ = cashier. Lots of produce = cashier. No time crunch = cashier. One item = self checkout (do not hold up the cashier's lines).

Sounds great. Except apparently the closest Aldi to me is 1,170 miles away.

It all ends up going full circle. From paper bags to plastic bags, and back to paper bags. Now it's from checker, to self check out, and back to checker. So eventually I'll have a checker ringing up my groceries and putting them into paper bags like back in the 80s.

Wow, that is far. Just stay away from Wally World (Walmart) and Target. If possible, go for the smaller stores, or corner shops. For me, it is Aldi (yeah, a big company) or a locally owned store for some rare items.

I like self-checkout because like you say are faster .... also I like bagging my stuff because some things need to be double bagged ... have had too many times where single bags have given way while brining them into my home.

Like you though ... won't pay extra for it.
