I would say that the evidence indicates that Jesus did descend to hell. That's why there are imprisoned spirits there that he preached to, 1 Peter 3:19, 2 Peter 2:4.

The Bible is not a science textbook. Genesis was written in an ancient near east context with an ancient near east cosmological perspective.
