Why is evil people portrayed as intelligent?

Superior ability breeds superior ambition. The worst evils in human history were committed by educated men -- like Lenin and Goebbels -- whose intellectual abilities made them feel they knew more than most, including how to order society, and gave them a cold pride & contempt over the rest of us.

What are YOU currently reading? (8)

I just finished No King, No Country about a Roundhead officer who was accused of mutiny by Cromwell (for requesting his troops' back pay) and forced to flee from England, to try and make a new life for himself in the American colonies. About to start The Usurper King, about the fall of...

What are your thoughts on a Tik Tok ban?

The legislation in question is FAR more invasive and sweeping than just banning tik-tok. TT is absolute poison, and the app itself is spyware, but DC doesn't need more power over people's apps and data.

What video games are you currently playing?

Planet Zoo, like Cities Skylines, is a game I could see loving in high school and college when I got deep into the weeds with games. These days between work and grad school (14 years removed from my bachelor's), I have to settle for mindless stuff that doesn't require too much of me. The Sims 4...

    CompTIA A+ has expired

I hadn't heard of this. I continually do refresh classes to stay ahead of changes, but my job is only partially technical (I'm a librarian who wears three hats -- tech support, historical research, direct patron response) so I don't have an incentive to keep paying for certs.

Can I just... Hang out at church?

When I was a teenager, I was the soundman and had keys to the church -- so I'd go there frequently to read, especially after school. Back then my mom was babysitting until the early evening, so there were toddlers and babies at the house. My best friend and I would get coffee at the gas...

    Hello....again

Greetings, everyone. I registered here a loong time ago when I had just left the Pentecostal church and was an angry-atheist. After a couple of years I mellowed and developed an inexplicable (at the time) interest in spirituality, and after a couple more years, suddenly felt called to attend a...

    Alabama folks

I saw on the news yesterday that Enterprise High students are resuming classes at a college campus -- I believe the time reported was 12:30 - five. I hope they're adjusting well.

Is that where you have to spend an eternity at a campfire sing-along where the only instruments are banjos and knee-slapping?

    Missing the Point

In other words, even if some people live godly lives (for the right reasons), if they go to their grave not vewing a literal Hell as truth, they will go to Hell for not believing Jesus' words -- and some people who are against Pearson think his doctrine is causing people to burn in the Hell they...

    Missing the Point

It's just that the lack of empathy on some believers' parts saddens me. People who believe in Hell shouldn't speak of it so lightly, as if it's a regular jail sentence. It seems that all too often the attitude associated with people who preach Hell is smugness -- not sorrow. I think perhaps the...

    A question for athiests

I don't profess to know why the law of gravity is as it is. However, just because I don't know the answer to a question does not mean I should settle for made-up answers.

    Missing the Point

A couple of days ago, a friend of mine (who is a Oneness Pentecostal) and I listened to "Heretics", an interview with Carlton Pearson done by the NPR show This American Life. Pearson, as some of you may know, was once a prominent evangelist who lost favor with the Pentecostal crowd when he...

    What inspired your screen name?

Mine is from a song by Gary and the Pacemakers called "Ferry 'Cross the Mersey". To me, the song is about the search for belonging. Life goes on day after day Hearts torn in every way So ferry 'cross the Mersey 'Cause this land's the place I love... And here I'll stay. People, they rush...

star trek XI.. anyone looking foward to it?

It's hard to picture Kirk and Spock without picturing Shatner and Nimoy .Someone at the Trek BBS suggested Matt Damon as young Kirk, which I personally like; I've been a Damon fan since I saw The Rainmaker in eleventh grade. I read recently, though, in the new Star Trek magazine that the...
