He was given a job to do and did it, no questions asked. I think it will be similar with the two witnesses, assuming of course they really are two individual witnesses and not Revelation-style symbolic language for something else.

There is a different rendering to Revelation 11:9.
The word translated as "bodies" is actually the singular πτῶμα which can mean "fall", "disaster".
Therefore:
"And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their FALL three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves"
Rather than TV and the internet showing two dead bodies, it will be showing reruns of their murder presumably to the delight of their audience.
