16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. 17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is (love), so are we (love) in this world. 18 Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s (loving and revealing) light came into the world, but people loved the (hidden evil) darkness more than the light, for their actions (,after the light’s arrival,) were (still) evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins (,which they love doing,) will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”
5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is (loving and revealing) light, and there is no (hidden evil) darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
19 We love each other because he loved us first. 20 If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? 21 And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers.

We love because he loved us first. If we don’t love people we can see, we cannot love the unseen God. God’s (loving&revealing) light came into the world, but (some) people loved the (evil&hidden) darkness more than the (loving) light, for their actions were evil (still afterward).
